Worth the Hype?! – ‘OHana Dinner Experience

On our recent trip to Disney, we stayed at the Poly (aka Polynesian, review to come). And therefore decided to make sure to hit up ‘Ohana and Captain Cook’s. We wanted to also check out Trader Sam’s, but that didn’t work out with our schedule, but there’s always next time. The Poly is actually our home resort (we are part of the DVC) and this was our first time staying there on site as well as utilizing our DVC membership.

The Menu

The dinner consists of 4 different courses and they are as follows:

  • Starters
    • Pineapple-Coconut Bread with butter
    • Mixed Greens Salad with a Lilikoi dressing
  • Appetizers
    • Pork Dumplings
    • Honey-Coriander Chicken Wings
    • Noodles tossed in Teriyaki Sauce
    • Stir-Fried Vegetables
  • Skewers
    • Sweet-n-Sour Chicken
    • Spicy Grilled Peel-n-Eat Shrimp
    • Szechuan Sirloin Steak
  • Dessert
    • ‘Ohana Bread Pudding a la mode

You also receive 2 sauces, Peanut and Sweet-n-Sour Sauces. I’m a sauce girl and they were both pretty good.

Standard drinks are included, (e.g., soda, lemonade)

Estimated Price: Per Adult ($46), Per Child ($26)

Food Review:

I would say overall the food was mediocre, however, I may have had high expectations going into this dinner. All the reviews I read, everyone raved about ‘Ohana, more for the breakfast meal, but some for the dinner. It is family-style and “all you care to enjoy” which I appreciated it. The only part that was amazing was the famous bread pudding, but you can also get that from the Tambu Lounge. I will say my family is not big on buffets, since we usually don’t request more food, so for us, the value is somewhat lost.

Overall Experience:

The dining room is nice and spacious. The staff is very friendly and family-like 🙂 We did have to wait for about 30mins past our dinner reservation; our reservation was at 6:30 pm, but we didn’t get seated until a little past 7 pm. It actually worked out because we got to enjoy the Happily Ever After fireworks (@Magic Kingdom) from our table view. Additionally, there was entertainment provided by a musician walking around playing the ukulele, which definitely set the mood. My children are very picky eaters and the staff was very accommodating and provided several options (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,  chicken fingers). They also brought out rice crispy treats with Mickey sprinkles for dessert. Overall, I would say, the dinner experience is not worth the hype. For a buffet, we (kids too!) really enjoyed Boma at  AKL (Animal Kingdom Lodge). We probably will not go back to ‘Ohana’s for dinner, but may try out breakfast instead next time.

And with that, we hope you’re having a magical day!
